Posted on: 17 October 2018

If you're planning a move, it's time to start with the preparation. Packing for a cross-country move requires a lot of planning. To help get you started, here are four tips that will make the process of preparing for your move go that much smoother.

Prioritize Your Goals

When it comes to a cross country move, the first thing you need to do is prioritize your goals. Make a list of the things that you need to accomplish ahead of your move and then prioritize them in order of importance. Starting with a priority list will ensure that everything gets done in a timely manner, and that you're not left trying to finish crucial items at the last minute.

Gather Your Supplies

Whether you're packing for a cross country move, or one down the street, you're going to need plenty of packing supplies. You know that you'll need your boxes but there are some supplies that you might not have thought about. Now that you're packing for your move the following items will make life much easier.

Packing Tape

Before you start packing, make sure you have plenty of packing tape on hand. You'll be using packing tape on just about every box you pack. To make sure you don't run out while you're packing, be sure to purchase a few extra rolls.

Box Cutters

If you don't have a box cutter around the house, you need to pick one up before you start packing. Your box cutter will come in handy for cutting through things such as bubble wrap and your packing tape.

Self-Stick Labels

You'll want to know where all your boxes go once they're packed. The best way to identify contents of your moving boxes is to attach self-stick labels to each of them. That way, you can mark where each box goes in your new home. Don't forget the permanent marker. You'll need something to write with.

Enlist a Packing Team

When you're packing your home up for a long-distance move, you need all the help you can get. Gather friends and family to help you with the packing. You can assign one or two people to each room to make sure that the job gets done quickly. If you'd prefer to have the packing done professionally, you can hire a packing service to come in and take care of everything for you.

Choose the Right Boxes

When you're preparing for a move, one of the most important things you can do is choose the right boxes. You're going to need a variety of moving boxes, including plastic containers. Cardboard boxes are great for those lightweight things you're packing up. However, for the heavier items, or items that need additional protection, it's best to have a supply of plastic, airtight containers on hand.
