3 Things You Can Do To Prevent An Accidental Sprinkler Discharge

Posted on: 6 November 2018

A fire sprinkler system is an excellent addition for any home or business. Not only does a sprinkler system reduce injuries and fatalities associated with a fire, but it also slows the spread of the fire, decreasing the amount of damage to the property. However, it is possible for the fire sprinkler system to accidentally discharge when no fire is present. Here are a few things you can do to prevent this from happening.

1. Keep Heat Sources Away From the Sprinkler

The presence of heat is what activates your sprinkler system and causes it to emit water. Since your sprinkler system cannot tell the difference between heat from a fire and heat from a heater, it is important to keep high heat levels away from your sprinkler. Make sure to position any heating vents so that they do not emit heat towards the sprinkler.

In some cases, you may not be able to keep your sprinkler system away from all heat sources. For example, skylights in your living room may need to peacefully coexist with your sprinkler system. If you know your sprinklers are subjected to regular heat exposure, make sure that the system's activation threshold is set at the appropriate temperature. Remember to readjust the threshold when you install a new heat pump or heater.

2. Prepare the Pipes for Freezing Weather

Freezing temperatures can wreak havoc on pipes of all kinds, including those that provide water to your sprinkler system. When the pipes freeze, this causes an increase in pressure that can damage the system. When the pipes unfreeze, this results in water discharging from the system.

To prevent your sprinkler system's pipes from freezing, it might be necessary to add anti-freeze to the water. Or, you might need to remove water from portions of the sprinkler pipes that are prone to freezing or adjust the positioning of some of the pipes. Consult with an experienced sprinkler technician to determine the best course of action for your sprinkler system.

3. Have Your Sprinkler Regularly Serviced

It is important to have your sprinkler system serviced on a regular basis. How often you need to have your sprinkler system serviced depends on its age and condition. Older systems need more frequent servicing to make sure they work as intended. You can ask a pro who specializes in fire sprinkler systems for a servicing schedule that fits your sprinkler.

Repairing old or worn out sprinkler components before they corrode or come loose takes care of problematic areas before they weaken to the point that they cause an accidental discharge. For more information and assistance, contact your local fire sprinkler services today.
