How to Hire Drivers for Your Business

Posted on: 20 October 2020

If you run or manage a business and need someone to handle the in-house transportation of goods or services, then you will need to find people willing to become drivers. Due to the nature of the business, it's important to make sure that you hire the right person for the job. You can do this by determining what licenses your drivers need, sharing the job opportunity around wherever relevant, and finding someone with the right driving history.

The Right Licenses

One of the most important parts of hiring drivers is to make sure that the license or licenses they have lined up with what you need. Many businesses find that they need someone with not only a regular state-issued driver's license but also someone with a commercial driving license, such as those transporting goods across state lines. There are many different types of commercial driving licenses, including those for different sized vehicles, the transportation of different materials, and even for driving heavy construction equipment. Once you've determined what kind of licenses your driver needs, you can find applicants.

Put the Job Out There

The second major step, albeit a fairly obvious one, is to share the job opening with anyone with the relevant skills. As a business owner or manager, you have multiple options for finding applicants, including employment websites, local newspapers, and even putting up a sign. You may also benefit from putting out job applications on commercial driving websites and other community resources, especially if you are willing to hire those from across the country or if you have multiple locations. The more places you share your opening, the better your results will be.

Driving History

Finally, you'll want to hire someone with a long enough driving history to effectively manage the goods or people that you transport, regardless of whether you need a driver to move cars in a parking lot or to move jewelry across state lines. It's important to note that it can be difficult to find drivers for hire, even if you've sent out the job opening everywhere you can think of. The United States currently has a truck driver shortage, so if you need someone with that type of driving skill, then you may not have many options. However, other driver jobs may offer more chances to find someone that has a long, safe driving history.

Driving jobs are an important position. When finding drivers for hire, make sure you find someone with the right licensure and driving history for your driving needs.
